Today, though at first perhaps seeming to be in conflict, Peter’s twin background of fusion and bebop is leading him to seek innovative and contemporary approaches to jazz performance by expanding the jazz improviser’s rhythmic “palette” to include not only traditional swing rhythms, but also contemporary Latin, funk and even hip-hop rhythms. For Peter, it’s ultimately about integrating the positive aspects of groove-oriented music with the spontaneity and artistic challenges of the bebop jazz tradition. Thus, Peter’s rediscovery of his childhood love of jazz was indeed a kind of coming home, however it was a return made richer by the unique experience of playing with Hiroshima.
