The ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ Riff

Now that you’ve got some serious country string bending under your belt, this is one of the more famous and recognizable riffs that utilize this technique.

Keith Richards plays this classic song in open G tuning, as he does many of his guitar parts, and in today’s lesson I will show you how we can replicate it in open G and A positions. The G run is more like Keith’s, using the bend in combination with the higher strings, while the A is an interesting approach that uses the lower strings for harmony, and requires that we bend in the opposite direction of the G run.

It’s a good exercise that will help you understand both ways of re-creating the pedal steel sound for this really cool and very important style. Have fun with it!—Arlen Roth
