Highest Price Paid for ten foot Gibson sculpture to date

London England – 21st November 2007..The Gibson Guitartown London Charity Auction sponsored by Hard Rock, Coutts & Co bank and Newbridge Silverware took place last night (20th November) at a special charity auction event held at the IndigO2. The charity auction was streamed online live around the world via The Auction Network website and by Ebay to a capacity audience. Auctioneer Daniel Kruse and MC Tony Moore entertained the captivated attendees for the auctions two hour duration which was followed by a lively set from The AllStars band. The Gibson Guitar European Bus also marked the occasion by rolling into London where it was positioned by the entrance of the O2 Arena.

 

A 10ft tall hand-painted Gibson Les Paul replica guitar signed by Sir Paul McCartney became the star attraction of the night. After a competitive bidding war the giant guitar was eventually auctioned off for an amazing £60,000. Sir Paul McCartney said, "I'm really amazed and very happy that the guitar went for so much and for such a great cause."

 

Gibson Guitartown London is a charity-inspired campaign, bringing the power of music together with art to raise money for Nordoff–Robbins Music Therapy, The Prince’s Trust and Teenage Cancer Trust. Over £200,000  (over $400,000 USD) was raised from the sale of the 62 hand painted and signed Gibson guitars which will be split equally between the three charities.

Our sincere thanks go to Gibson Guitars for all their support and hard work - funds raised will make a real difference to the lives of teenagers with cancer across the country."

The charity auction was hosted by rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia auction house, Julien’s Auctions.  Before the auction Darren Julien, president and CEO of the auction house, said, “With confidence falling in the housing market, we’ve seen a huge upturn in interest in rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia.  Following the auction Darren Julien added, “We are delighted that so much was raised for these three worthy causes and are grateful that Julien’s could be a part of such an amazingly organized event by Gibson U.K.  The excitement in the room was fuelled by the adrenaline of hundreds of active bidders around the world all vying for their chance to own a one of a kind Gibson custom guitar.”

 

Sir Paul’s guitar beat the second highest bid of the night by an incredible £49,000.  Ronnie Wood’s guitar went for £11,000, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters signed “The Wall” themed guitar designed by Gerald Scarfe, (artist responsible for the original The Wall artwork) went for £10,500, Slash’s Gibson SG guitar went for £8,500 while Paul Weller’s 10 foot Gibson Les Paul replica guitar designed by Sir Peter Blake reached £8,000. Ari Goldberger the successful bidder of the Paul McCartney giant guitar will donate it to the Great Ormond Street Hospital at an event in December where Sir Paul will be in attendance.

 

Between June 2007 to September 2007 thirty 10 foot hand painted, free standing Gibson Les Paul replica guitars were on public display around More London on London's South Bank by City Hall, SE1. An additional 30 hand painted and signed regular sized Gibson SG guitars were publicly displayed around The O2 Arena in Greenwich. All the associated visual artists including Sir Peter Blake, Andrew Logan, Peter Saville, Anton Corbijn and the caricaturist Gerald Scarfe collaborated with many of Britain’s best known and respected musicians exclusively for the Gibson Guitartown London charity campaign.

 

Each individual hand painted 10 foot Gibson Les Paul replica guitar has been personally signed by rock n’ roll legends and mainstream artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, Brian May, Robert Plant, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Jeff Beck, KT Tunstall, Bruce Dickinson, New Order, Dirty Pretty Things, Kasabian, Hard-Fi, James Blunt, Katie Melua, Stereophonics, Mark Knopfler, Roxy Music, Gallows and The Kooks to name a few. Each individual hand painted  Gibson SG guitar has been personally signed by musicians such as Ronnie Wood, Slash, Paul Rodgers, Roger Waters, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lemmy, Depeche Mode, The View, The Fratellis, Lost Prophets, Kaiser Chiefs and Mark Ronson to name a few.
